O que éWhat it is
This thesis investigates the function of art not as an aesthetic object or passive representation, but as an active technology of consciousnessan instrument capable of producing measurable changes in the observer's phenomenological state. The research formalises the Ontological Mirror: a three-phase production protocol combining analogue decalcomania, controlled combustion, and algorithmic bilateral mirroring, situated in the Practice-Based Research tradition. The series Ecos do Cosmos (September 2024 to March 2025, nine works, documented at talmobellato.art) constitutes the primary observational corpus.
O argumento central: dois modos distintos de fazer imagemThe central argument: two distinct modes of image-making
A tese propõe um discriminante estrutural entre duas funções fundamentalmente diferentes de produção de imagem:The thesis proposes a structural discriminant between two fundamentally different functions of image production:
A genealogia do discriminanteThe genealogy of the discriminant
In 1919, Hans Prinzhorn assembled at the Heidelberg Psychiatric Clinic what would become the most significant collection of art produced by psychiatric patients in history, some 5,000 works by nearly 500 individuals. Prinzhorn himself had already identified the distinction between expression that emerges from compulsion and expression that seeks communication, the first formal articulation of the discriminant this thesis formalises. The Surrealists, on discovering Prinzhorn's work in 1922, sought to simulate the pathological in order to access what they believed was its creative freedom, but failed to see that the pathological is not free: it is maximally constrained by its compulsive substrate.
The thesis anchors the discriminant in two documented mechanisms.
Pareidolia as an evolutionary receptor. The perception of structured, meaningful patterns in ambiguous stimuli is not a cognitive error, it is an evolutionary feature of the visual system. The fusiform face area and the parahippocampal place area are activated by the suggestion of faces and structured environments in ambiguous stimuli, before conscious recognition occurs. The Ontological Mirror protocol exploits this systematically: decalcomania produces chaotic, bilaterally symmetrical patterns calibrated to activate pareidolic processing at high intensity; algorithmic bilateral symmetry amplifies that activation, because it is the single strongest cue of biological significance the visual system possesses.
The sublime and the Default Mode Network. Research in neuroaesthetics (Vessel et al.) has shown that artworks experienced as deeply moving, as sublime, produce characteristic DMN activation together with deactivation of task-positive networks. The experience of the sublime involves the temporary dissolution of the boundary between the self-model and the aesthetic object: the observer does not observe the work, they are briefly incorporated into it.
A ancoragem ancestral: as cavernas do Paleolítico SuperiorThe ancestral anchoring: the Upper Palaeolithic caves
The deepest genealogical anchoring for Art-as-Technology is not the twentieth-century avant-garde but the Franco-Cantabrian cave paintings. Lewis-Williams argues that the paintings at Lascaux, Altamira, and Chauvet were produced by practitioners, shamans, who deliberately fixed on the cave wall the geometric and representational visual content of altered-state visual experience. Cave art is not symptom. It is technology, produced with protocol, intention, and receiver orientation.
O protocolo formal, em três fasesThe formal protocol, in three phases
O discriminante formalThe formal discriminant
Four structural, not aesthetic, criteria distinguish the two modes: (1) Protocol · intentional versus compulsive origin; (2) Receiver orientationdesigned to produce a specific phenomenological event in the observer, versus containing the practitioner's state without aiming at its transmission; (3) Multilayered depth · rewards iterative engagement, versus exhaustion on first reading; (4) Hermeneutic opennessinvites and sustains structured interpretation, versus resisting interpretation or imposing a rigid hermeneutic that admits no external reading. A work of great formal beauty can be symptom. A work of apparent ugliness can be technology. The discriminant operates independently of aesthetic quality and institutional validation.
A série Ecos do Cosmos como corpus observacionalThe Ecos do Cosmos series as observational corpus
As nove obras da série documentam um arco fenomenológico coerente, correspondendo estruturalmente à sequência navegacional da Zona Cinza: da dissolução estrutural (Resurrection Tornado, o evento de entrada na Zona Cinza) através de fases de potencialidade, construção e recepção, até o estado integrado e estabilizado (Celestial Codex), no qual o praticante deixa de usar o método e passa a sê-lo.The series's nine works document a coherent phenomenological arc, corresponding structurally to the Gray Zone's navigational sequence: from structural dissolution (Resurrection Tornado, the event of entry into the Gray Zone) through phases of potentiality, construction, and reception, to the integrated, stabilised state (Celestial Codex), in which the practitioner ceases to use the method and comes to be it.
Perguntas frequentesFrequently asked questions
Does this mean "pathological" art (Art Brut, psychiatric patients' art) has no value?
No. The thesis is explicit: the Art-as-Symptom mode is not a failure of artistic production, it is a different function, with documented clinical significance. The schizophrenic masters studied by Prinzhorn produced objects of genuine psychological necessity. The problem the thesis identifies is not in the symptom itself but in the misclassification of symptom as technology, when it is presented as consciousness engineering without in fact offering the observer a protocol of transmission.
O discriminante é sobre qualidade artística? Is the discriminant about artistic quality?
No. The four criteria are structural and functional, not aesthetic. Formal beauty and institutional validation do not determine whether a work is symptom or technology, what determines it is protocol, receiver orientation, multilayered depth, and hermeneutic openness.
