A Anatomia Geofísica da Anomalia

The Geophysical Anatomy of the Anomaly

The Geophysical Anatomy of the Anomaly

The superposition of the terrestrial dipole's tilt with a reverse flux patch beneath southern Africa, producing a field minimum from Chile to Zimbabwe.

SAMA arises from the superposition of the terrestrial dipole's axial tilt with a reverse flux patch at the core-mantle boundary beneath southern Africa, producing field intensity of roughly 22,000 nanotesla, about 44% below global average.

Within the anomaly, the inner Van Allen belt descends to roughly 200 km over the South Atlantic. From 1840 to 2020 minimum intensity dropped about 8.3%, and satellite data confirmed, as of 2024, the anomaly's bifurcation into two lobes, without clean historical precedent.
