Rede de Modo Padrão

Default Mode Network

Default Mode Network

The set of brain regions that sustains continuous autobiographical narrative and projection of imagined futures, active when the mind is at rest.

The Default Mode Network, DMN, is the set of brain regions, including the medial prefrontal cortex, posterior cingulate cortex, and hippocampal formation, that activates when attention is not directed toward an external task. It sustains continuous autobiographical narrative, evaluation of experience against internal models, and simulation of possible futures.

Under healthy regulation, the DMN alternates fluidly with task-directed attention networks, and this alternation is a marker of cognitive flexibility. It is not inherently dysfunctional: it is the neural infrastructure of the habitual self, the continuity that allows a person to recognize themselves as the same across time.
